This summer, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Kuia is offering four internship opportunities designed to grow whānau capability, support succession planning, and provide pathways into our iwi. These internships are about learning by doing, strengthening connections to kaupapa Māori, and building skills that benefit whānau, hapū, and iwi.

Mō mātou | About us

Ngāti Kuia are the descendants of the oldest people of Te Tauihu o Te Waka a Māui. We are the descendants of Māui, Kupe, and Matua Hautere. Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Kuia Trust is an iwi organisation with a proud history of giving back to the community, supporting the operation of our marae, and contributing to the restoration and well-being of the taiao and tāngata whenua.

Te Mahi | About the role

  • Hours: 20 hours per week
  • Duration: Three months, 1 December 2025 – 28 February 2026 (including our holiday shutdown period).

This internship is perfect for someone passionate about te moana and the protection of fisheries. You’ll gain hands-on experience working alongside kaitiaki, fisheries administrators, and learn about tikanga and mātauranga Māori that underpin sustainable fisheries management.

What you’ll experience:

• Explore the fisheries settlement, Quota Management System, Annual Catch Entitlement, Fisheries Management Areas, and Stock Assessments

• Understand South Island Customary Fisheries regulations and expanded customary rights

• Monitor and report on customary and commercial fishing activities

• Learn about aquaculture practices in Te Tauihu

• Engage with kaitiaki to understand the cultural and environmental significance of fisheries

• Assist with data collection and analysis, including catch records and compliance reporting

• Participate in hui and fieldwork to gain a broader perspective of the fisheries landscape
