This is the new exhibition that celebrates the strength, versatility and resilience of pakohe and the people who have worked it over hundreds of years (spoiler alert - Ngāti Kuia features!).
This is a significant occasion and marks the first time pakohe, an important taonga in Te Tauihu, has been publicly celebrated locally.

Te Tuhi o te Whenua: Pakohe Unearthed offers a unique glimpse into the world of pakohe, from its ancient roots to its contemporary revitalisation and the deep significance it holds in the history of Te Tauihu. It also follows the revival of pakohe carving and introduces some of the key contemporary artists behind its resurgence.
In addition to local taonga, the exhibition features significant historical pieces loaned from museums, including Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, Auckland War Memorial, Marlborough Museum, Te Ahu Museum in Kaitaia, and Tūhura Otago Museum.
