Te Kotahi o Te Tauihu Charitable Trust is seeking a senior emergency management leader to shape the future of iwi emergency management across Te Tauihu. In this pivotal role, you will represent iwi at governance and operational levels, drive iwi-wide strategy and coordination, and embed tikanga Māori into emergency systems. You will lead and strengthen iwi emergency readiness, response, recovery, and reduction efforts, operationalise the Māori Emergency Operations Centre (MEOC) framework, and ensure iwi and marae are fully integrated into Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) systems. This is a fixed term position commencing January 2026 through to October 2026.

  • ​Lead Māori Emergency Management for Te Tauihu.
  • Drive strategic and operational readiness across iwi and marae.
  • Influence regional emergency planning and governance.

  • Provide strategic advice to iwi governance and regional emergency management forums.
  • Coordinate iwi emergency management activities and oversee regional readiness and recovery planning.
  • Lead the establishment of the MEOC and act as iwi liaison during emergency activations.
  • Build strong partnerships with iwi, marae, CDEM groups, councils, and government agencies.
  • Deliver training and capability-building for iwi, hapū, and whānau.
  • Support marae-based response hubs and maintain databases of vulnerable whānau.

Ngā Pūkenga e Hiahiatia ana

  • Tertiary qualifications in emergency management, community development, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
  • Proven leadership experience in emergency management or regional coordination.
  • Ability to influence policy and planning at governance level.
  • Skilled in relationship management and culturally safe engagement.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and cultural competency skills.
  • Familiarity with CDEM systems and CIMS training (Level 4+ desirable).
  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate responses effectively.
